MANILA, PHILIPPINES SEPTEMBER 2009 – Lost homes, lost livelihood, lost lives. In the aftermath of one of the worst flooding in Metro Manila and other parts of the country in years, it was a time for swift action among corporations and ordinary citizens alike to do their share and help the thousands of Filipinos affected by Typhoon Ondoy. McDonald’s charity arm, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) was one of the first organizations to respond and mobilize relief efforts.
RMHC, along with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), dispatched and distributed truckloads of bread buns and juices to different barrangays in Laguna, Pasig and Rizal. Some of the baranggays/evacuation centers reached among others were:
• Brgy. Sto. Domingo, Cainta Rizal
• Brgy. San Vicente, Angono, Rizal
• Brgy. Ampid, San Mateo, Rizal
• Brgy. Rosario, Rodriguez, Rizal
• Brgy. San Antonio, Bay Laguna
• Phil Sports Arena (formerly Ultra), Pasig
To further relief efforts and reach more evacuation centers, RMHC Global has also donated 25,000USD or 1.2 million pesos to the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC).
According to RMHC President, Mr. Kenneth Yang, “The devastation brought upon by Typhoon Ondoy is overwhelming. Thousands of Filipinos have lost their homes, source of livelihood and for some, even the lives of their loved ones. It is during these times of desolation where the Filipino spirit of unity, compassion and generosity should shine through.”
